Author Tamara Ewoldt Lewis has just written a book describing her uncle’s heroic adventure piloting a Douglas TBD Devastator Torpedo Bomber for the U. S. Navy during the initial action of the Battle of the Coral Sea, the first major carrier ba􀆩le of World War II.

On May 4, 1942, pilot Lieutenant Leonard Ewoldt and rear gunner Ray Machalinsky took off from the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown for a bombing raid on several Japanese Warships off the small
island of Tulagi in the Solomon Islands. After their bombing run, they returned to the Yorktown but unknown to Ewoldt and Machalinsky, the Yorktown had been ordered away – in radio silence. Not finding the ship and low on fuel, the men crash landed their plane in the Coral Sea some 100 or more miles south of Guadalcanal, where they dri􀅌ed without food or water for over 3 days.

Overlooked by Allied aircraft who flew high above the raft, confronted by a Japanese Destroyer that left them to a watery demise, and circled repeatedly by a shark that bumped the raft in an
effort to knock the men into the sea, the 2 brave men somehow survived, washing up on the shore of Guadalcanal near Avu Avu. Their only problem – The island was known to be inhabited by
